Let’s start with what a kilt tuxedo is and what it’s for.

What is a kilt tuxedo?

A kilt tuxedo is a formal attire version of a traditional kilt. It combines the aspects of Anglo-American black tie and the historic style and tradition of the Scottish kilt. There’s a lot of information and opinions on what is and isn’t a kilt tuxedo, but we’ll do our best to explain it to you in detail.

A kilt tuxedo is also known as an Argyll kilt jacket. Typically speaking, these jackets include a basic black suit jacket ad somewhat fancy buttons decorating the jacket.

It acts as a hybrid of traditional doublets and suits jackets that were originally developed in the victorian era. A helpful way to envision it is by picturing a doublet minus the tashes.

It should be noted that an Argyll kilt jacket is mainly used when discussing kilt jackets in general. It’s not so much a specific style.

If you want to talk about more contemporary jackets that better emulate a tuxedo jacket, a good term is a Wallace jacket or Crail kilt jacket. These types of jackets were evolved from the typical victorian jacket and have been basically cut short to accommodate a kilt.

How do I go about renting a kilt tuxedo?

The first thing is understanding exactly what you need. Depending on the event that you’re attending, it varies a lot.

For instance, if you have a wedding coming up, you might need to coordinate with your groomsmen to make sure you’re all in line.

The next important step is taking your measurements. You don’t want to look like a kid playing dress-up, so ensuring that your kilt fits is very important.

How do you do that?

There are a number of ways that you can make sure that you get the right measurements. However, we’ll stick with our method! For it, we only need you and a tape measure. You don’t need a tailor's tape measure for this either! A normal carpenter one will work fine. If you have that, then you’re good to go!

The first measurement that you want to take is your neck. Start by taking the tape measure around the base of your neck. If you do it high, then the measurement could be inaccurate.

Then as you have it around your neck, pinch it together while looking into a mirror to check the measurement, and write it down. Another convenient way to get your neck measurement is by looking at one of your favorite dress shirts! The tag usually has the neck measurement right there.

Now, for the sleeve measurement. There're two different ways for you to get the measurement. One is by extending the tape measure from your spine, below your neck area, to your wrist. The other measurement is taken by measuring from the point on your shoulder (usually where your seams meet) down to around the base of your thumb. If you measure to your wrist, it would be a bit short.

For the chest measurement, it’s best to have help, but you can do it yourself! Simply take the tape measure around your chest, below your breast area. From there, looking into a mirror, you can see the measurement.

Waist measurement is essential because it can be a bit tricky to achieve the right kilt fit without it being perfect. So please don’t guess the measurement. As you do the measurement, be sure that you don’t measure around the soft part of your waist. If possible, measure your hip bone area.

When should I order the kilt?

\e recommend ordering around two to three months in advance. Although the earlier, the better. So it’s a good practice to place the order as soon as you know the kilt that you need.

If you have multiple people or groomsmen trying to order kilts, the process is the same for them! Have them order online as soon as possible. It can also be a good idea for them to include the reservation name too!

If they can’t order online, they may order by phone too for a small fee.

All that’s left is to do it!

When you have the style and the measurements, there’s only one thing left to do, order the kilt! As we said, the sooner, the better to ensure there are no delays.

If you’re still left with some questions, we can certainly help. The answer is most likely on our site, but please pick up the phone and call if the need arises!
