If you have a good wedding kilt that fits you right, and you really enjoy it, it can be annoying to think of only wearing it when a wedding comes up.
So naturally, the question of whether you can comfortably wear it elsewhere is pretty important!
We’ve been in the same boat before, so we’d like to explain if it’s comfortable and if it’s a good idea to wear it!
Let’s start with what a wedding kilt is and what it’s meant for.
Wedding kilts
Wedding kilts vary in length from eight-yard kilts to five-yard kilts. The eight-yard kilt is certainly the heirloom style and has a lot of impressive flow when you walk. The five-yard option is known as the “day-kilt,” and it’s still impressive. However, it doesn’t have the same flow or swing when you walk. It’s mainly a good option for warmer climates.
Which yard kilt you chose matters a lot when trying to determine if it’s acceptable to wear to another event.
The eight-yard kilt is a great example of fine kilts that are stylish, formal, and have a good bit of flourish. Unfortunately, they usually have a good bit of weight in them. That means that depending on what you’re doing, you can get pretty worn down. That extra weight also means a good bit of heat build-up.
On the other hand, the five-yard kilt is known by another name, the “sport kilt”. As the name implies, this kilt is much better for those of you looking to attend an event that may go on for many hours or a summer event held outside. The lighter weight can give you that extra boost of energy that you may need.
What material is the kilt?
What kind of kilt do you have? Aside from the length itself, the material is the most important thing to think about. If you plan on donning a leather, dense tartan or denim kilt, it may be a good idea to stay away from any outdoor summer events and mainly attend indoor well-conditioned ones.
But if you have something light and flexible, then you may be okay.
Another important question to ask yourself
Other than the length and weight of the kilt, you need to take into consideration what you plan to pair with it. What sporran or coat are you coordinating your kilt with?
The sporran and coat can make a huge difference depending on the kilt. So if you want to be absolutely sure that you aren’t over or underdressed and also that you’ll be comfortable, you need to spend some time looking at what you’ll pair with the kilt.
There are dress sporrans, semi-dress sporrans and even day sporrans. In the case of a wedding kilt, you most likely have a dress sporran, so unless the event is of equal importance, you may want to swap it out for another.
You may also want to take the shoes that you have available into account! If you only have the proper shoes for a wedding event, it can be hard to be comfortable in a more relaxed dress code environment.
The bottom line
Listen, kilts are comfortable attire that can suit you well at many events. As long as you treat it with respect, kilts are comfortable, flexible and stylish. It’s also good to point out that kilts are even more comfortable than some pants on occasion.
Kilts free up your lower body, which can mean less sweat or chaffing.
At the end of the day, if you’re respecting your kilt, and not wearing it as a joke, you should be more than okay. Kilts can be worn on many occasions, and whether or not you feel comfortable will likely be up to you! Because some people aren’t comfortable in shorts, it’s just personal preference.
