Let’s talk about comfort first.
Now, we have to mention that comfort isn’t the same for everyone. What is comfortable for me may not be comfortable for you, and vice versa.
With that in mind, I want you to take everything that I say with a grain of salt. Try out a different assortment of things yourself before deciding what you like and don’t like. The most likely scenario is that you will find your perfect level of comfort and modern style somewhere between the options that I provide.
Another thing is that comfort with a kilt can be easily accomplished – they’re actually known for being very comfortable. So, it’s not something you want to overthink! The only thing you need to do is wear the kilt correctly and ensure that you don’t wear a formal kilt to a casual event without making some changes to it first. After all, wearing any formal attire in a casual atmosphere isn’t exactly comfortable.
So plan ahead and match your kilt to the upcoming event. You can even consider asking a friend what they’ll be wearing.
How to get a modern look with a formal kilt
I don’t blame you for wondering, but it’s really a simple answer because one thing you may not know about kilts is that a massive part of the outfit is the accessories you don. Now by accessories, I don’t simply mean the sporran, belts, hose, buckles or other similar things – you can look here for more information on those because they’re absolutely important.
But in this post, when I say accessories, I’m referring to shirts, coats, ties and even shoes that you can wear with a kilt. So keep that in mind.
Examples
Now the modern look can be accomplished in several ways, and modern can mean different things. For example, you may attend a formal event, such as a wedding. And in that case, you’d want to accompany the kilt with a modern suit top—something like a clean black blazer, white dress shirt and simple, colorful tie to match your kilt. Put simply. You would want to coordinate your kilt with the other outfits there.
But in another case, if you only have a formal kilt and you want to wear it to a less formal event, you can dress it down by wearing a nice modern sweater as a top or even a stylish leather jacket. Perhaps some interesting nonformal streetwear shoes! A benefit of that would be a huge boost in comfort.
So, you can see what I mean by modern can mean different things. But what that also means is that there isn’t ONE answer. Only a general direction that I can point you in.
Don’t overthink it
It may seem out of the ordinary or even a little daunting– wearing almost whatever you want with your kilt. But let me assure you that unless it is a traditional, formal kilt event, nobody will be upset at some added flare on your kilt outfit! In fact, the odds are good that they’ll be more so impressed than anything else. So, experiment. Show your personality through your ensemble. I can guarantee you that you won’t regret it.
Because when you reach that modern look ideal without going way outside of your comfort zone, you’ll have a more comfortable experience overall and definitely be better for it.
