Each year, more and more people are wearing kilts to their wedding. This outfit choice brings either additional personality or deep-rooted culture to any nuptials. Since it is not the norm to wear a kilt to a wedding, it may be hard to find the right one and understand how to style it. Luckily for you, you do not have to look far. In this guide, you will learn how to select and wear a kilt wedding outfit.

What are the different types of kilt wedding outfits?

While throwing on a kilt for your wedding does count as having a kilt wedding outfit, there are specific types of styles you can choose. When it comes to wedding kilts, there are three options:

  • Traditional
  • Full dress sporran
  • Semi-formal sporran

In this guide, we will go over each option in full detail. Later, you can then decide on what style calls to you.

What is a traditional kilt wedding look like?

The first thing you may be wondering about wedding kilts is what they look like traditionally. To have a traditional kilt wedding look, you need:

  • A waistcoat with three buttons.
  • A plain colored shirt that is usually white.
  • A black bow tie or one that matches your clothing ensemble.

These are the three basic pieces to create a traditional kilt look; however, you can add accessories that we go over below to jazz up the look.

What is a full dress sporran?

Just like traditional kilt attire, a full dress sporran is another formal style. In fact, it is the most formal style that you can choose. A full dress sporran is essentially a bag that attaches to your kilt. When people say full dress sporran, they are referring to the Prince Charles type of look. This outfit features the three pieces from the traditional look, an ovoid body, a metal cantle, fur fronts, fur gusset and three to six fur tassels with cross chains.

You use silver or pewter to make the metal cantle. The design on the cantle usually consists of Celtic knotwork and Scottish symbols like the lion rampant, thistle, stag or saltire. A full dress sporran fastens at the bottom with a small stud or flap. The best thing about these sporrans is that they are the largest, so you can carry many different essentials inside like your phone, keys, wallet or a few shots of alcohol.

What is a semi-formal sporran?

A more common option that modern grooms and attendees go with is the semi-formal sporran. Semi-formal sporrans also work well during graduation, parties or other events. You start off with the three pieces from the traditional look and then add on a leather sporran pouch.

Semi-formal sporrans have fur fronts just like full dress sporrans but are not as thick. They are typically made out of hare fur or hide. This sporran will also have a leather gusset, three decorated fur tassels with cross chains and a leather flap. The flap itself will have a Celtic or Scottish symbol or design made out of a pewter badge. Then, you will fasten it with a metal stud.

Are there any kilt wedding accessories?

Everyone needs to have the option to accessorize at their wedding, even the grooms. There are, in fact, kilt wedding accessories that you can add for your wedding day, such as:

  • A kilt pin
  • Hose
  • Kilt flashes
  • Sgian dubh

A kilt pin is a fastening device that keeps your kilt closed. You can check out our latest guide, How to Select & Wear Kilt Pins, for more information about these fasteners. The hose is the long socks you would wear with your kilt. You want your hose to compliment your outfit. These hosen should also never be white, but they can be cream.

Kilt flashes act as a decorative piece as well as a mechanism to keep your hose up. It comes from the same tartan used in your kilt and attaches to the top of the hose. A sgian dubh is a small single-edged knife that accompanies your look. This small knife does have a cover that stays on, so you do not have to worry about stabbing yourself. When it comes to its placement, you would set the blade downwards on your dominant leg.

Can I wear a kilt if I’m not Scottish?

You do not have to be Scottish to wear a kilt. Instead, the Scotts welcome all people to try out their traditional wear. Therefore, if you love Scottish culture or just kilts in general, do not be afraid to try one out for your wedding. Plus, you can get all your groomsmen to match!

Is there an age range on a kilt?

Sometimes people think that only the groom and his groomsmen can wear a kilt. However, any boy of any age can sport one. Therefore, your junior groomsmen, ushers and ring bearers can be just as stylish as you. If you do not want to let the fun end with just the wedding party, you can encourage your guests to wear a kilt as well. The more kilts, the better!

Where can I find a wedding kilt?

Is a wedding kilt calling your name? Good thing you are in luck! You can find wedding kilts all over the internet. You can also get one custom-made by a seamstress. However, we recommend shopping around and reading reviews before settling for a kilt. You want to make sure you find one of the best quality and match your wedding theme.
