The Wedding Kilt and Your Scottish Wedding

It’s hard to imagine a setting more romantic than a Scottish wedding. Whether your ancestry is from the Fair Isle or not, many couples these days are opting for the mysticism and romance of a Scottish wedding. A kilt makes a statement of:

  • Romance
  • Nostalgia
  • Patriotism
  • Heritage
  • Pride

Choosing the Right Kilt
If you’re going to be true to the Scottish theme, then the groom should definitely wear a kilt. But how do you choose the right one? That’s where we can help. A wedding is a formal occasion, so you’ll need a formal kilt.

For weddings, there are two traditional kilts: the 5 yard wool kilt and the 8 yard kilt. The 5-yard kilt uses up to six yards of wool cloth. This kilt is a lighter weight, so it is perfect for summer and more casual weddings. The 8-yard kilt is our traditional premiere kilt and is a heavier option using more fabric. The 8-yard kilt is considered an heirloom kilt and is the most authentic. This kilt has the best swing when you walk, due to the large amount of fabric used to construct the kilt. Regardless of which option you choose, we have every tartan under the rainbow, so you’ll find exactly what you want, whether that be your clan tartan or just a tartan you’re particularly fond of.

At a wedding, it is most customary to wear your clan tartan. This is a way for every generation participating in the wedding to honour their Scottish ancestors. For many, the kilt is a garment of rich cultural significance and a way to display both national and family history. Therefore, the kilt is treated with distinction and generally only worn at formal affairs like weddings.

Without a doubt, clan tartans have become one of the most important symbols of Scottish heritage. A tartan is made of wool, and has different colors to represent different clans. Colors and patterns (called setts) are changed to create a unique pattern for each clan.

For centuries, Celts have worn tartans; the practice dates back to the 5th century BC.
You’ll probably recognize a few of these famous clan tartans:

  • Fraser
  • Ferguson
  • MacLean
  • Campbell
  • Black Watch

The Other Half
Just as important as the kilt is what you wear on your top half. It all depends on how informal or formal your wedding will be. We want you to look best from your head to your toes, so here are some other accessories you should consider.

If your wedding is formal, consider a Prince Charlie jacket, vest and bowtie. This is the traditional “black tie” attire for an evening wedding or wedding in a Scottish castle. Basically, this is considered to be the Scottish version of the tuxedo.

If you want to wear the equivalent of a nice suit, consider pairing your kilt with an Argyll jacket and vest, which many grooms choose for a Scottish-themed wedding. The jacket and vest are usually worn with a white dress shirt, and the whole ensemble can be semi-formal or formal depending on what accessories you choose.

If you’re looking for elegant but informal, consider a tweed vest and jacket. This is a great option for an outdoor wedding or a morning wedding. Another look is a cream or black Highland shirt paired with a chieftain vest. This is also a good option for an Outlander or renaissance themed wedding.

What Is A Sporran?
Do you have a sporran? Do you even know what a sporran is? A sporran is basically an external pocket, since kilts are not designed with pockets. Depending on the type of dress you are wearing to your wedding, and how formal or informal your ceremony is, will drive the type of sporran you use:
A dress sporran is usually worn with the Prince Charlie or Argyll attire. Semi-dress sporrans can be dressed up or down and are usually used with the Argyll or tweed packages. A day sporran is by far the least formal. It is very simplistic and typically worn for daytime or casual beach weddings.
